Let's hear from Jen, Chronic Pain Personal Trainer Now.
"Sports have always been my driving force. I put in the work at school to ensure I could stay in the game. Throughout high school, I immersed myself in multiple sports every season. Even during the off-season, I stayed engaged by coaching at a sports camp and teaching swim lessons. I also delved into strength training, teaching myself during summers by running to the gym, lifting, and then running home. The human body's capabilities never ceased to amaze me. Pursuing my passion, I enrolled at the University of Maryland, where I continued to balance sports with my studies in kinesiology.
It was here that I was first introduced to a wide variety of options that I could pursue professionally. I learned that I was much more intrigued by helping people grow and strengthen before being injured instead of being the one to help them recover. So I got certified as an American College of Sports Medicine - Clinical Exercise Physiologist and started training.
I have been working as a Personal Trainer for 15 years now and continued to participate in sports and fitness, and have never stopped learning, I can’t get enough. However, after an ACL tear, hip pain, and two pregnancies, I found myself on a different path.
My pregnancy and postpartum journey was by far my hardest. During my first pregnancy, just as I found my rhythm, unforeseen hurdles disrupted any semblance of a routine (amniocentesis, spotting, and more). My oldest was delivered via c-section after laboring for many hours, marking a significant turning point in my physical and mental well-being. After the birth, as I started getting back into fitness, running felt awkward, my strength waned, and it took a grueling year to regain any semblance of my pre-pregnancy self (although my race times never really dropped back to pre-pregnancy).
Fast forward a little more than two years, and my second pregnancy presented an entirely new set of challenges. Almost immediately, physical changes and discomforts disrupted my equilibrium. Leaking incidents in public and a struggle to maintain a consistent workout routine added to the mix. Another c-section followed, but this time the recovery was smoother, offering a glimmer of hope for a more positive postpartum experience.
Yet, hope was short-lived. Three months after the birth of my second child, a relentless back pain emerged, gradually morphing into a debilitating force. Simple movements became agonizing, and the fear of bending to perform basic tasks brought me to tears.
Desperate for relief and not finding any with Pelvic Floor or traditional PT, I embarked on a search for any certification, CEC, or professional who could help me. Then I discovered the Pregnancy and Postpartum Corrective Exercise Specialist Certification (PCES), it seemed to be exactly what I needed to rid myself of the aches and pains I couldn’t seem to do myself.
The PCES certification not only pinpointed the mistakes of my past but also reignited a fervent passion for helping others navigate the challenges of life. I am extremely passionate about exercise AND prevention! To achieve prevention, we must first learn the proper way to exercise and move. My extensive background and knowledge allow me to create a program that is simple to follow, yet effective and addresses our most stubborn and real issues all backed by science. For this reason, I welcome clients who are lucky enough NOT to suffer with chronic pain. We can also use a little bit of injury prevention in our fitness programming.
I aim to provide the help and support that was prominently absent during my challenging journey. The transformation witnessed in my life and the lives of my clients fuels my unwavering dedication to making a positive impact."
Unlike most personal trainers who work out with you but don't leave you with a solid plan to follow when you're on your own, at Home Bodies you will always receive assignments to help you stay focused when you're not with the trainer. Every client receives a full workout plan including video of the exercises assigned as well as lifestyle and diet recommendations if desired.
